A partial hospitalization program (PHP) can give your teen a safe space to focus on their mental health so they can build skills to manage and cope with it. At Family First, we use both evidence-based and experiential techniques in our partial hospitalization programming in South Florida.
Techniques Used in Family First’s PHP
We know that we need to use more than one-on-one classroom-style therapy to keep the teens we care for engaged. That’s why we combine psychotherapy (talk therapy) sessions, group sessions and activities, and creative process therapies in our partial hospitalization programming.
Mindfulness and Meditation
Teens often have a hard time checking in with themselves and understanding how they actually feel. Emotions and feelings can remain a mystery, and as a result, they go ignored. To help with that, we prioritize mindfulness throughout each day in our PHP. Plus, every morning and afternoon includes specific meditative practices that connect mind and body.
Academic Support
Just because your teen is attending mental health treatment doesn’t mean they’ll fall behind in their studies. The academic team at Family First checks in with every teen after morning meditation to get them started on their schoolwork for the day. We’ll help them check in with their teachers and set achievable goals for staying on trackโincluding completing assignments during treatment each day.
Executive Functioning
Your teen’s executive functioning skills help them plan ahead, stay on task, regulate emotions, and practice self-control. When they’re struggling with their mental health, they’ll likely have a hard time with executive functioning. We work with our clients in groups to help them learn and improve their executive functioning skills so they’re better prepared to succeed in their daily lives.
Psychoeducation
Learning about mental health is just as important as schoolwork. By gaining more knowledge about how their brains, emotions, and behaviors connect, your teen will be better equipped to manage their mental health and cope with challenges that they run into in their life. We’ll help them study and grasp important concepts so they can take their new insights home with them.
Creative Groups
Art, dance, and gardening are just a few of the options for experiential therapy we offer. Experiential and creative processing allows teens to connect with their emotions in a different way than traditional talk therapy. Many times, teens have a hard time finding the right words to describe how they feel or why they act a certain way. Non-verbal methods like these can help them express themselves and uncover underlying issues that may be contributing to their mental health.
