an adult and teen boy shake hands after motivational enhancement therapyTeens dealing with mental health issues often have a hard time believing they can truly make changes that will impact their futures. Some talk therapy methods help them discover the true power they hold to make their own decisions. As your teen navigates the transitions of adolescence, motivational enhancement therapy (MET) can help them explore their deep-seated passions and put them on track to a brighter future.

We integrate MET into our adolescent therapy programs at Family First. Every teen that we help benefits from an individualized treatment plan that takes into account their unique struggles and goals. Our therapists work closely with each teen to provide them with the tools they need to overcome challenges and build a strong foundation for their future. What Is Motivational Enhancement Therapy?

MET is a client-centered counseling approach designed to evoke internally motivated change. It’s grounded in principles of motivational psychology and seeks to help individuals explore their ambivalence towards change, identify their goals and values, and increase their self-efficacy. It’s often used as a brief intervention to initiate or strengthen the motivation for change in individuals struggling with addiction, but it can also be effective for teens dealing with mental health issues.

During MET sessions, your teen might discuss their current behaviors, the consequences of those behaviors, and how they align with their personal values and goals. The therapist will guide them in exploring their motivations for change and help them identify potential barriers to achieving their goals. Together, they will come up with a plan to overcome these barriers and work toward positive change.

Benefits of Motivational Enhancement Therapy for Adolescents

MET offers numerous benefits for adolescents:

  • Empowers adolescents – MET fosters personal responsibility and empowers adolescents to take control of their behaviors.
  • Enhances motivation – By targeting motivation, MET enhances the willingness of teenagers to engage in therapy and make positive changes.
  • Supports self-efficacy – MET supports the belief that adolescents can successfully overcome their challenges, thus boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Addresses various issues – MET can be used to address a variety of issues, including substance abuse, mental health conditions, and behavioral problems.

At Family First, motivational enhancement therapy plays an important role in our talk therapy programming. A better, healthier future for your teen starts with the exploration of their own passions, values, and motivations.

Our Mental Health Program for Teens

Our program doesn’t just focus on traditional therapy sessions. Instead, we use a variety of evidence-based methods to help adolescents reach their full potential.

Helping Teens

We work to engage with teens in a way that is meaningful and relatable to them. Our therapists use a mix of methods, including:

  • Expressive art therapy
  • Challenging exercise, including CrossFit sessions at our gym
  • Outdoor activities, like paddleboarding and deep-sea fishing
  • Talk therapy in group and individual settings

Teens also receive support from their small clinical group and academic tutors. We provide a safe, nurturing environment where teens can learn to manage their mental health and focus on their personal growth.

Supporting Families

We believe that family involvement is crucial in the mental health and well-being of teens. That’s why we offer family therapy sessions, workshops, and educational resources for parents to help them understand their adolescent’s challenges and support them throughout their journey.

Your family will continue to receive support from us for at least 12 months after your teen completes our program. Our goal is to help them make lasting changes and build a brighter future for themselves.
