Meditation Is Therapeutic

The calm, focused state achieved through meditation can be incredibly therapeutic, especially for adolescents who are navigating the challenges of growing up. Meditation allows individuals to clear their minds and focus on the present moment, helping them to reduce stress and anxiety.

In addition, research has shown that regular meditation practice can lead to physical changes in the brain, including increased gray matter density in regions associated with emotional regulation and self-awareness. This can be especially beneficial for adolescents who are still developing these areas of the brain.

The Benefits of Meditation Therapy

Meditation therapy offers numerous benefits for adolescents, including:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety – By focusing on the present moment and becoming more aware of their thoughts, adolescents can reduce stress and anxiety levels.
  • Improved emotional regulation – Through regular meditation practice, adolescents can learn how to identify and manage their emotions in a healthy way.
  • Increased self-awareness – Meditation helps adolescents develop a deeper understanding of themselves, including their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
  • Enhanced resilience – By learning how to cope with difficult emotions and situations, adolescents can become more resilient and better equipped to handle challenges in the future.

Self-regulation is one of the most imposing challenges teens with mental health conditions face. Meditation can help adolescents learn how to manage their thoughts and emotions more effectively, leading to better self-regulation and improved mental well-being.

How Meditation Therapy Works During Care

At Family First Adolescent Services, we incorporate meditation therapy into our holistic approach to adolescent care. Our trained therapists guide adolescents through various techniques such as mindfulness meditation, guided imagery, and breathwork.

During individual or group therapy sessions, adolescents learn how to calm their minds and bodies, identify and manage emotions, and cultivate a more positive outlook on life. These skills can help them cope with the challenges of adolescence and develop a stronger sense of self.

Meditation Therapy Programming Is Just One Part of Our Approach

Teens often express difficult emotions through unhealthy coping mechanisms, like substance abuse, self-harm, and other destructive behaviors. At Family First Adolescent Services, we offer a comprehensive range of evidence-based therapies and programming that address the root causes of these issues.

We support teens and families with a comprehensive approach, including:

  • Therapy – Evidence-based therapy methods and techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness meditation therapy.
  • Academics – A personalized academic plan designed to meet the unique needs of each student to help them excel in school
  • Communication – We provide updates to parents at least three times per week, and our case managers are available to text 24/7.
  • Family support – We offer family therapy and support to help parents understand their child’s struggles and learn how to communicate and support them effectively.
