Why Do Teens Drink?

Teens may turn to alcohol for a variety of reasons, including peer pressure, curiosity, stress relief, or simply wanting to fit in with their peers. Some teenagers may also use alcohol as a form of self-medication to cope with underlying mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.

Expressing challenging feelings is especially hard for teens as they are in a stage of life where they are still developing their sense of self and navigating parental expectations. Alcohol can temporarily numb these feelings and provide a false sense of relief.

The Dangers of Adolescent Alcohol Addiction

Adolescent alcohol addiction can have severe consequences on a teenager’s physical and mental health.

Physical Dangers

Since teens are still developing, their bodies are at a higher risk of immediate physical effects of alcohol abuse, including:

  • Impaired brain development leads to issues with memory, decision-making, and impulse control
  • Liver damage
  • Weakened immune system
  • Increased risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities due to impaired judgment and coordination

Friends and others around teens are also at risk if the teen who has been drinking drives or engages in other hazardous activities.

Mental Health Dangers

Adolescent alcohol abuse can also trigger or exacerbate underlying mental health issues, such as:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Increased risk of developing a substance use disorder
  • Decreased school performance and attendance
  • Relationship problems with family and friends

Alcohol addiction is a challenging, isolating condition for anyone at any age. For teens still mentally and physically developing, it can be even harder.

Our Holistic Approach to Alcohol Addiction Treatment

At Family First, we believe in a holistic approach to adolescent alcohol addiction treatment. We address not only the addiction but also any underlying issues and traumas, focusing on the physical, mental, and emotional wellness of each teen. Our team also engages with the family to create a healthier, more compassionate support system at home.

Teen Alcohol Addiction Treatment

The residential program at our South Florida center is focused on helping teens quit drinking while exploring the underlying reasons they chose to start in the first place. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Evidence-based and experiential therapy
  • Medication management
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Academic support
  • Family counseling

During their stay at our safe campus, teens learn how to express their emotions in a healthy way and develop coping strategies to deal with stressors without turning to alcohol. They also participate in fun, therapeutic activities like equine therapy and art therapy.

Family Support

Parents of teens at Family First will also engage in regular family therapy and parental support groups. Supporting a teen during addiction recovery requires a dedication to healing the entire family unit. Our team equips parents with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to better understand their child’s struggles and provide a positive and nurturing environment at home.

After a teen completes treatment, we provide at least 12 months of aftercare support. This allows for a smooth transition back into daily life and provides additional resources for continued recovery.
