Understanding Adolescent Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy programming can play a crucial role in helping adolescents navigate the challenges of mental health during their formative years. It is an evidence-based approach that involves talking to a trained professional about one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with the goal of improving overall well-being.

Group discussions are also commonly used in adolescent psychotherapy, allowing teens to connect with others who may be going through similar experiences and learn from each other’s perspectives. This can help reduce feelings of isolation and improve social skills.

Specific Teen Psychotherapy Methods

There are several types of psychotherapy methods that can be used to help teens with their mental health challenges. Some of the methods we incorporate at Family First include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) – This approach focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that may contribute to mental health issues.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) – DBT combines elements of CBT with mindfulness techniques and focuses on helping individuals regulate emotions, improve relationships, and develop coping strategies.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) – ACT focuses on accepting and managing difficult thoughts and feelings while also identifying personal values and committing to actions that align with those values.
  • Motivational interviewing (MI) – This method involves collaborative conversations aimed at increasing motivation and commitment to change.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) – EMDR helps individuals process and work through traumatic experiences.
  • Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) – REBT focuses on identifying and disputing irrational beliefs that may contribute to emotional distress.

Depending on the specific needs of each teen, our team may integrate one or a combination of these methods to provide comprehensive and effective treatment.

Psychotherapy Programming in Our Care Plans

At Family First, our individualized care plans include psychotherapy as a key component. We believe in the power of open communication and exploration to help teens and families address deep-rooted mental health issues and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Teen Therapy

Throughout their time at our South Florida treatment center, each teen will have access to regularly scheduled therapy sessions with their assigned therapist, as well as group therapy sessions and other experiential activities. Our staff-to-client ratio of more than 3:1 ensures that each teen receives personalized attention and support from our team.

Our academic programs and focus on wellness ensure teens receive support in all areas of their lives, fostering a sense of balance and overall well-being.

Family Counseling

We also recognize the importance of addressing family dynamics and relationships in the healing process. Parents engage in regular family therapy sessions with their teens as well as parental support groups with other families. This allows for open communication, improved understanding, and strengthened relationships.

From the most common to the most complex mental health issues affecting teens today, our team at Family First is dedicated to empowering teens and reconnecting families.
