Does My Teen Need Residential Psychiatric Care?

It’s challenging raising a teen. Between lashing out and being stuck in their own worlds, balancing school, summer jobs, and sports, and just trying to help them prepare for the future, you’ve got a lot on your plate. When your teen struggles with their mental health, it becomes even more difficult. If your teen is dealing with severe mental health issues, residential psychiatric care can provide the support they need to find a better way forward.

At Family First, we know that teens don’t act out because they just want attention. There’s something deeper going on, and with some exploration led by our team of professionals, teens can discover what’s going on and learn to cope with it. We offer residential psychiatric care for teen boys 13–18 at our South Florida campus. Call 888.904.5947 to learn more.

Isn’t Residential Care Too Much?

Mental health care has come a long way. Residential care is no longer a place to confine people who struggle with their emotions, actions, and behaviors. Instead, it’s a place where licensed, compassionate professionals can help them connect with what’s going on beneath the surface and learn to navigate a healthier path forward.

Good teen residential care centers are designed with safety, security, and wellness in mind. Here, teens can receive 24/7 support from care teams that have expert knowledge of their conditions and how to approach treatment.

Signs Your Teen May Need Residential Psychiatric Care

Residential treatment is not the right fit for every teen struggling with their mental health. Sometimes, more intensive inpatient care is needed if they need immediate attention to stabilize from self-harm, eating disorders, or other acute concerns. Other times, outpatient care is more appropriate, allowing teens to return home after daily therapy.

Your teen might benefit from residential treatment if:

  • They’re discharged from inpatient care and still need continuous support
  • They’re dreading to go to school or have cut ties with friends and family
  • Their mental health symptoms are getting in the way of everyday life
  • Traditional therapy and medication management aren’t making a significant impact
  • You regularly find yourself worrying about their safety, either at home or when they’re out

If any of these signs sound familiar, it may be time to explore residential psychiatric care as an option for your teen. It’s essential to remember that every teen is different, and what works for one may not work for another. An accredited residential care center that offers personalized treatment will work closely with you and your teen to create a plan that works.

Residential Treatment at Family First

We know that the decision to find treatment that puts your child in a place away from home is nerve-wracking. At our campus in South Florida, we’ve created a safe, secure, and engaging environment where teens can heal.

Boys-Only

Our residential program is exclusively available to boys 13–18. Clients can connect with others experiencing similar challenges as they work toward healthy goals. We’ve found that providing a gender-specific program allows for more focused treatment and encourages clients to be open and honest about their experiences without feeling judged.

Safe, Secure Campus

With homelike accommodations, a CrossFit gym, and outdoor spaces designed to promote healing, our campus is a place where clients feel comfortable and can focus on their health. We provide 24/7 supervision and support from licensed professionals to ensure the safety of our clients at all times.

3:1 Staff-to-Client Ratio

The Family First team has more than 120 years of combined clinical experience. Each teen we help has a small, dedicated care team, which means more personalized attention and support. They’ll check in with a nurse every morning and meet with a psychiatric provider at least weekly.

Consistent Communication

Parents and guardians receive at least three treatment updates each week, and our case managers are available via text day and night. We also work closely with parents to educate and provide family therapy so that teens return to a supportive environment.
