Family First Adolescent Services is dedicated to providing specialized care for adolescent boys between 13 and 18 who are dealing with mental health concerns, behavioral issues, and substance use problems. Our residential program in Palm Beach Gardens is for boys only, and our co-ed day program (PHP) is also available for families in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties.
Mental Health Support Designed for Teenage Boys
We understand that teenage boys sometimes require specialized care to help them overcome their mental health challenges. As they go through adolescence, young men experience a wide range of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that can be difficult to navigate. These changes often lead to mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and even substance abuse.
Living with unprocessed trauma and other distressing experiences can be a heavy burden for young boys, and without proper support, they may struggle to cope. Our specialized adolescent rehab program gives them a safe space where they can explore these deep-rooted issues with help from our experienced team.
Our Residential Treatment Center for Adolescent Boys
At the heart of Family First is our residential treatment center exclusively for adolescent boys. Here, boys receive comprehensive care and support for their mental health and substance use issues while living on our safe, secure campus. During their time, they’ll be in an environment that fosters growth, recovery, and, ultimately, transformation.
During treatment, your son will stay at one of our safe, nurturing houses. He’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful weather of South Florida while receiving support from a personal care team that’s made up of:
- An individual therapist
- A family therapist
- An academic coordinator
- A case manager
- A program coordinator
He will also meet with a nurse daily to monitor his progress and check in with a psychiatric provider at least once a week. During therapy, he will be engaged in one-on-one, family, or small group settings consisting of six to 14 boys. Our experiential therapists help teens explore the area while connecting with themselves through paddleboarding, deep sea fishing, jumping at trampoline parks, and more.
Flexible Day Treatment for Teen Boys
We also offer day treatment—partial hospitalization (PHP)— in a co-ed setting in South Florida. Your son may not need treatment in our residential center, and our Pinnacle Day Program might be the perfect place to start or continue healing.
Partial hospitalization treatment could be the right fit if your son just completed a residential treatment program, needs more flexibility to accommodate a busy schedule, or just doesn’t need 24/7 care. Either way, our team will help you find the best level of care so your son gets the support he needs.
We Know Boys’ Mental Health
Our boys treatment program is rooted in evidence-based therapeutic approaches that tackle a wide spectrum of mental health issues. These include:
- ADHD/ADD
- Anxiety
- Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD)
- Depression
- Problematic gaming
- Substance use
No matter what your son is dealing with, we can help. We have experience treating the most common and complex issues facing teen boys today. Our goal is to empower your son to gain control of his life, build self-esteem, develop healthy relationships, and cultivate long-lasting mental wellness.
Recognizing When Your Son Needs Help
As a parent, understanding when your son needs professional help is crucial. Some common signs of a deep-rooted mental health condition include:
- Persistent irritability
- A decline in academic performance
- Social withdrawal and isolation
- Extreme mood swings and unpredictable behavior
If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to consider seeking professional help for your son.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does My Son Qualify for Residential Treatment?
If your son’s mental health is getting in the way of his school, home, work, or social life, he may qualify for residential treatment. Any kind of mental health issue—depression, ADHD, gaming addiction, eating disorder, or anything else—can be severe enough to qualify your son for a residential program.
How Long Do Teens Stay in Residential Treatment?
Most of the boys in our residential program stay in treatment for at least 45 days. Some of the boys we help are in treatment for about 90 days. Even though it’s an extended time away from home, we support teens with academic programming, chef-prepared meals, local excursions, homelike amenities, and future planning.
What Comes After Residential Treatment?
It depends on how your son makes progress. A less intensive level of care, like partial hospitalization, might be the right next step, or he may be ready to transition back home. When he’s done with treatment, we’ll provide aftercare support for at least a year to help him—and you as parents—on track.
Why Do Boys Struggle with Their Mental Health?
Adolescent boys can struggle with their mental health for any number of reasons. There may be genetic or environmental factors, like relatives with mental health issues or exposure to traumatic experiences. Societal expectations can also take a toll, like the assumption that they should just “suck it up” or “deal with it” when they’re feeling sad, upset, or alone. They can also struggle with body image and fears of missing out, which are often made worse by social media. Boys, like all people, deserve the space to process their emotions and receive support so they can learn how to accept and live with them rather than ignore how they feel.
Will My Son Be Safe During Residential Treatment?
Your son will be in a secure place when he comes to Family First. We know the decision to find treatment for your son isn’t easy, and his safety is our priority. During residential treatment, he’ll stay in one of the secure homes on our campus with a small group of other boys. He’ll check in with a nurse daily and a psychiatric provider at least once per week. Plus, we have a staff-to-client ratio of 3:1, which means there will always be someone close by to make sure he’s okay. We’ll give you an update at least three times per week, and you’ll have 24/7 access to our case managers via text.
