Adolescent EMDR sessions can be effective in helping young people process their traumatic experiences so that they can avoid some of the long-term effects of unprocessed trauma. - [ADHD Rage Attacks](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/adhd-rage-attacks/): Teens with ADHD often struggle with impulsivity and reactivity, and these aren't easy things to just "get over" or control. They experience emotions differently, usually with an intensity that neurotypical people will never quite understand. Unexpected lashing out and blowing up—characteristic of ADHD rage attacks—might have you walking on eggshells around your teen, trying to avoid setting them off. But you'll never be able to control everything, and helping them learn how to manage their anger and recognize when it's bubbling up just beneath the surface can go a long way in regulating their emotions. - [ODD vs. Autism](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/odd-vs-autism/): Refusing to listen, especially when something is perceived as a demand, is an issue for neurodivergent and neurotypical teens alike. Parents know that refusing to listen (especially to authority figures) can happen even when it's least expected. Defiance—as normal as it is for teens—can get out of hand, though. And sometimes, it's the symptom of something like oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or even autism. - [Is My Teen Depressed, Moody, or Antisocial?](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/depressed-shy-or-antisocial/): If your teen is always grumpy or seems to get upset at every little thing, you might describe them as moody. But moodiness is not a specific mental health condition, and moods change more slowly than you might realize. Moods describe how someone feels and acts and are less specific than emotions or feelings. Someone with low mood might be hopeless and sad; low mood is characteristic of depressive episodes. An elevated mood might describe someone who is euphoric and upbeat. - [Reinforcing Social Confidence in Your Neurodivergent Teen](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/social-confidence-in-neurodivergent-teens/): Teens with ADHD and/or autism often have lower self-esteem than their neurotypical peers and struggle more in social situations. Learning social skills in group and individual therapy can help them overcome some of these self-esteem issues, but they'll need to continue to practice and reinforce them so they become habit. - [Autism vs. Social Anxiety: What to Know](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/autism-vs-social-anxiety-what-to-know/): Autism and social anxiety can both make social situations challenging, but they are distinct in how they impact behavior and experience. Many autistic people also experience social anxiety, adding another layer of difficulty when navigating social interactions.1 - [How Does ADHD Impact Impulse Control in Adolescents?](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/how-does-adhd-impact-impulse-control-in-adolescents/): The symptoms of ADHD can be a challenge for anyone. But when your child struggles with impulse control, it can feel like you never have time to make progress because you’re always on alert for the next call from school or outburst at home. Learning how to recognize the signs of impulsivity in your child with ADHD is the first step toward getting them the help they need to succeed in school and beyond. - [Choosing Between Stimulants and Non-Stimulants for ADHD](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/choosing-stimulants-or-not-for-adhd/): This article contains information about ADHD medications but is not intended to serve as medical advice. The first step is a comprehensive evaluation, which will involve gathering information from various sources such as your child's school, medical history, and family history. - [Why DBT for Adolescent Depression Can Be So Effective](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/why-dbt-for-adolescent-depression-can-be-so-effective/): Teens living with depression experience mood differently. "Just snapping out of it" isn't an option when living with a depressive disorder. It might even be hard for them to practice self-care and distract themselves with movies, music, or other activities that might normally help them cope. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for adolescents can help them learn skills to regulate their emotions and manage their depression better. - [How to Help Your Teenager Deal with Perfectionism](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/how-to-help-your-teenager-deal-with-perfectionism/): Good grades. Constant practice. Always being on. When does it stretch your teen too thin? Perfectionism in your teen takes a toll on their mental health. Sometimes, it can even be a sign of something deeper. - [Avoiding Negative Effects of Social Media on Teen Self-Esteem](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/avoiding-negative-effects-of-social-media-on-teen-self-esteem/): Social media feels endless. There's always something new to see, someone different to follow, and updates or notifications to check. Apps and sites are designed to draw people in and keep them engaged, and teens are the perfect targets. Without balance, the negative effects of social media can cause your teen's self-esteem to crash. - [How Do Teens in Residential Programs Continue School?](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/how-do-teens-in-residential-programs-continue-school/): Life doesn't stop while your teen is in residential treatment for their mental health. While they receive the expert care they need, they'll still need to stay on top of their schoolwork. It's a lot of responsibility to keep up with their assignments while attending therapy, but the staff at a good adolescent residential treatment center will be able to help them find balance in the process. - [How to Choose the Best Mental Health Care for Your Teen](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/how-to-choose-the-best-mental-health-care-for-your-teen/): Professional treatment can help improve your teen's mental health. Group therapy is one of the most beneficial settings for teens because it allows them to practice communicating and navigating situations similar to those in their daily lives. - [Coping Strategies for Teens with OCD](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/coping-strategies-for-teens-with-ocd/): Living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be challenging for anyone but is usually especially difficult for teens. They often don't have a lot of experience recognizing obsessive or intrusive thoughts; they are trying to balance their mental health while trying to fit in and find their own independence, and they may feel embarrassed or ashamed to talk about their symptoms. - [Is a Messy Room a Sign of Teen Depression?](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/is-a-messy-room-a-sign-of-teen-depression/): Teens aren’t often known as being the tidiest people. Class, friends, and new experiences are usually more important than taking time to clean their rooms. But sometimes, a messy room could be more than normal teenage business. There may be a link between a messy room and depression, but it takes some thoughtful consideration to be sure. - [How to Get a Teenager to Talk About Their Feelings in Therapy](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/how-to-get-a-teenager-to-talk-about-their-feelings/): It’s hard talking to teens, right? Their vocabulary seems completely different from your own, and it might never seem like they’re interested in what you have to say. It can be even harder when you’re trying to figure out how to get a teenager to talk about their feelings. Communicating about emotions is difficult for people of all ages, but with some compassion and empathy, you can bridge those gaps and make meaningful connections. - [Importance of Taking Care of Your Mental Health](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/importance-of-taking-care-of-your-mental-health/): When you think about staying healthy, your mind probably jumps to eating right, exercising, or getting enough sleep. But what about your mental health? Taking care of your mental health is just as important as looking after your physical health—it’s part of your whole well-being. You can do a lot on your own to take care of your mental health, but sometimes you'll need extra support—and that's okay. Teen mental health treatment is available and can help you learn how to better manage your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. - [The Connection Between Technology and ADHD in Teens](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/the-connection-between-technology-and-adhd-in-teens/): The amount of time your child spends on their phone, computer, and gaming system impacts their brain. One study from 2018 showed positive associations between a higher frequency of modern digital media and symptoms of ADHD.1 While it's not accurate to say that screen time directly causes ADHD, it is accurate to say that screen time has an impact on attention. The connection between technology and ADHD in teens may not be completely clear for a while, but you should still be taking your teen's screen time seriously. If they already have been diagnosed, enrolling them in adolescent ADHD treatment will help them learn important life and social skills that can make their transition into adulthood easier. - [5 Tips for Social Anxiety in Teens](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/5-tips-for-social-anxiety-in-teens/): Feeling like you're the only one who struggles in social situations? Teen social anxiety treatment can connect you with professionals who can support you as you improve your mental health. - [Signs of PTSD in Teens](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/signs-of-ptsd-in-teens/): Living through a traumatic event can be hard on anyone, but it can be even more difficult for teens. The feelings that can arise after the experience, sometimes without notice, are distressing and confusing. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone, but thankfully, treatment can be effective. Teen PTSD treatment might include talk therapy and/or medication. - [What Is Adolescent Bipolar Disorder?](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/what-is-adolescent-bipolar-disorder/): You might be familiar with bipolar disorder. You might know that it brings on periods of ups and downs, and a common treatment for bipolar is a medication called lithium. You might also have seen some common misperceptions about bipolar disorder like mood swings are constant or totally out of the blue. Adolescents with bipolar disorder might show symptoms a little differently than adults, but treatment can still be effective and should be started early, so they know how to manage their mental health in the future. - [Techniques Used in a Partial Hospitalization Program](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/techniques-used-in-a-partial-hospitalization-program/): A partial hospitalization program (PHP) can give your teen a safe space to focus on their mental health so they can build skills to manage and cope with it. Substance use can seem like a very adult way to cope with negative feelings—at the very least, it's a fast, appealing way to just put off addressing why they might feel bad. Finding help for your teen can give them the tools they need to quit drinking or using drugs and find a healthier way to cope as they enter adulthood. Involving your loved ones in their recovery process is an important way to show family support and strengthen your relationship with your teen. - [The Connection Between Teen Stress and Anger](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/the-connection-between-teen-stress-and-anger/): Adolescence can be challenging for both teenagers and their families. The rapid physical, emotional, and social changes can be overwhelming. Sometimes, teens don't know how to express themselves effectively and resort to anger. There is a strong connection between stress and anger and without healthy outlets, it can lead to destructive behaviors. Teen anger management programs can help young people learn how to cope with their emotions in a healthy way. - [ADHD vs. ADD in Teens](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/adhd-vs-add-in-teens/): When you were growing up or learning more about mental health, you probably heard both of the terms ADD and ADHD thrown around. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) was first diagnosed in 1980 and used until the condition was reworded to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in 1987. There weren't enough true differences between ADD and ADHD to warrant both diagnoses. Today, rates of ADHD—especially among adolescents—continue to rise, which may be in part due to more doctors being comfortable diagnosing and treating the condition. ADHD treatment for teens can be effective and extremely helpful, but it relies on an accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment plan. - [Anger Management for Teens](https://familyfirstas.com/blog/anger-management-for-teens/): Lashing out might seem like a normal part of teenage behavior, but it can quickly get out of hand. Rather than facing the fear of becoming lost in their own minds, therapy helps teens by providing guidance and support.  - [Dialectical Behavior Therapy](https://familyfirstas.com/our-program/therapy/adolescent-dialectical-behavior-therapy-florida/): During adolescence, your son will face more challenges than he's ever been aware of. These hurdles can cause strong emotions to arise, which can be difficult to process on his own. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a popular, evidence-based method that can help him regulate his emotions and learn how to become more resilient when he's stressed. - [Adolescent EMDR Therapy](https://familyfirstas.com/our-program/therapy/adolescent-emdr-therapy-program-florida/): We combine EMDR therapy with other evidence-based methods—including the NeuroAffective Relational Model® (NARM)—and holistic activities, like adventure therapy. Mental health conditions, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), are often diagnosed during this period. Finding help soon after receiving the diagnosis is vital. The transition from childhood to adulthood can be difficult for young men with BPD, and they may feel overwhelmed by their emotions and struggle with managing relationships, school, work, and other responsibilities. Borderline personality disorder treatment can provide support during this transition. - [Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy](https://familyfirstas.com/our-program/therapy/adolescent-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-florida/): At Family First Adolescent Services, we offer a specialized cognitive-behavioral therapy program tailored specifically for teen boys dealing with mental health and substance use issues. The adolescent anger management program at Family First in South Florida provides a safe and supportive environment for teens to learn how to cope with their anger. - [Adolescent Eating Disorder Treatment](https://familyfirstas.com/what-we-treat/adolescent-eating-disorder-treatment-florida/): Disordered eating doesn't affect only one group of people.
